Vintage Thursday Thingie: Lingerie Bag

This net lingerie/hoseiry bag belonged to my mother-in-law who lived in Paris and Berlin for several months in the late 1920s .

I don't think it was anything especially fancy in its time: it is machine made and is decorated mainly with tambour work. Tambour work, which looks like chain stitch embroidery, began to be machine made in 1834!I find the idea that this was just a practical item to hold your stockings or lingerie all the more enchanting: beauty should be part of everyday life. Even the back is lovely!

Oh that is neat. It sure beats my lingerie bag which is just some net bag from Wal-Mart with a zipper. I wish mine looked more like yours!

Now that seems so delicate to be used for what I thought lingerie bags were used for. Are they used for storing or washing the unmentionables? The plain utilitarian ones are what I've used for washing them in. I would much rather use a beautiful one like this.

That is so gorgeous! It actually makes wearing pantyhose slightly appealing... VERY slightly appealing, but still!

Thanks for the comment on my blog. That is a pretty bag. Interesting how today's lingerie bags look in comparism. I'm sure that these were of course washed by hand. Probably couldn't throw that in the washer or dryer!
