Vintage Thursday Thingie: Advertisements from 1931

I thought I'd share today some advertisements from 1931. I had no idea that Baker's Chocolate has been around since 1780.

Today we can say that Baker's Chocolate is the Choice of Good Cooks for two centuries and thirty years! And why is it called Baker's Chocolate...not as I always assumed because it's used by bakers-but because Dr. James Baker imported the beans and made the chocolate and named the company for himself!

Only unsweetened chocolate was made by the Baker's Chocolate Company until 1852 when an employee, Samuel German created a new sweetened chocolate...leading to German Chocolate Cake. Got me on that one too...I always assumed the recipe had come from Germany!

If chocolate desserts aren't your thing...how about some Junket. Lots of recipes here...brought to you by the Junket Folks and there's Little Miss Junket on the box! Junket has been around since 1874.
And what would you make your chocolate dessert or Junket dessert in...Pyrex of course! Plain glass Pyrex-since its 1931-but you could get the whole 10 piece set for $5.15!
Click on the pictures to enlarge and you can read all the advertising copy! Hope you enjoyed these ads and if anyone makes one of the Junket desserts-please let me know!

Those are great ads! I didn't know about Baker or German either. What in the world was Junket anyway, an early type of cooked pudding mix? Love the old Pyrex ad!

Oh junket, my um used to make it, haven't had it in many decades.

Very interesting! I thought the German Chocolate originated in Germany, too! Advertising has really changed - so many words! These days, it's all pictures and images!

I have heard of these products for years. Just did not know the history of them. Thanks for an interesting piece of information.

It's a known fact everything tastes better in Pyrex!

Thanks for all that info. I love learning new stuff!

Great post! I love old advertising, and I used to collect Pyrex bake ware, so I enjoyed seeing the Pyrex ad. But I'm not even sure what Junket is, so don't think I'll be making it anytime soon!

Happy VTT, and Happy Summertime! from Joy @ Joysweb

Hi Miri!
I love this post! So much fun to find out that Baker's Chocolate has been around since 1780. I wonder if we still use any other name brands from that long ago??? I've never heard of Junket, that's sure been around long time too.

Happy VTT!
Sally

I am not familar with junket but it sounds like today's instant pudding mixes? Pyrex is great - and you can use it in the microwave, unlike metal dishes.

I never would have guessed that Barker's and German came from men's names.

What great fun! I loved the ads. I didn't know German chocolate was that old but I did know that they invented the German Chocolate Cake. For some reason my mother knew that and told me way back in about 1980 when I was looking for recipe. The recipe used to be right on the package of chocolate.

Thanks so much for sharing these; Jan is right, advertising has sure changed.
