Iris Quilt Flimsy Finished

I finished the Iris Quilt flimsy. I first added an inner border to the sides of the quilt.

In the original 30s pattern, the applique was done on elongated hexagon blocks (think Japanese lanterns-a popular 30s shape) rather than on rectangle blocks. I didn't see the point of that but I did want to "reference" the original so I decided that I'd create a border that gave the silhouette of a lantern shape.

I just went with a brighter yellow for the outer border. Excuse the photo-the quilt top is straight but it doesn't look it in this pix! :)

The quilt top finishes at 50" x 60".  Its a 6" border...is it looking a little heavy in this pix? Should I think about cutting down the border? LOL! I didn't think it looked heavy until I saw this pix.

I pinned back the side borders to about 3"...

Not sure I like it better. Ugh! I hate when indecision rears its ugly head.

Wonderful setting, Miri! I agree with you about the border. Also, you run the risk of treating the space with a lot of quilting that might detract from the rest of the quilt, I think.

The irises are so beautiful! Maybe the border will look fine with a binding?

Your irises are beautiful, and I love the Japanese lantern shape outer border. The sashing does look just a little much from here, but it might be that it's such a more intense yellow.

I say leave the wider border the thinner one looks odd to me Miri.
Love the yellow.

How pretty! Love the irises. Cool to do the inner border as a nod to the vintage style. I like the brighter yellow against the pale. As far as the width of it, it looks proportionate to the blocks, so it seems fine to my eye.

Lovely! It's really neat, the way you made the lantern-like inner border. I think it looks better with the wider border. ;D

I love your use of bright yellow. I'm thinking with the quilting and a binding, it will all come together better than you think by just looking at the flimsie. I like it with the wider fabric border myself.

Such a beautiful quilt!! Love the homage to the lantern shape and the yellow borders. I'd leave the wider border, and put some interesting quilting in it - maybe a floral motif, or leaves, or even long spiky leaves like irises have. I agree with Pattilou, it's going to look wonderful when the quilting and binding are done!
