Yesterday, while looking at blogs I came across the Modern Quilt blog where they're having an interesting discussion on what is a modern quilt. One writer showed this book and I think its very true-alot of these quilty ideas look like many quilts being made today.
Here's the back cover...a bit dreary except for that hot purple pillow....
but look at this wonderful quilt-it really does look like something new and modern! And its aqua!
This is a drawing of a possible quilt-I think I'd like to make this and the black, white and orange is perfect for today's quilts.
How about a hot pink optical illusion quilt...do you see those circles? Remember those pictures with the hidden picture...I was like that guy in "Mall Rats"-I could never see them!
But this has to be the best idea and one that we have all seen done in fabric all over quilty blogland! Have you noticed that the drawings in this book are so 1970-orange, hot pink and green!
Now if you don't think you'd make a quilt or a groovy skirt like on the cover-don't despair-this may be just for you!

I think that today the 1970s "modern" seems less modern than the quilting from the 1930s.
My grandmother told me when I was a teenager that what was high fashion then had been high fashion when she was younger, and that everything comes back, just in a little different form. She was a great one for holding on to things and re-using them.
A perfect blog for me today. I love any kind of quilt.

That's soooo Grooooovy! I wasn't quilting in the 70's, but sure do remember those fabrics. They made a big comeback when Stack N Whack was the rage in the 90's as they were perfect for the requirements for that. Enjoyed this post so much.
It was fun looking at the quilts but one of them made me dizzy - I think it was the circles one!
I love old quilt magazines, actually I love pretty much any old magazines. They are so much fun to page thru and the ads are something else. Thanks for sharing.

wow aren't those 70s patchwork & quilting designs 'out there' they certainly weren't afraid of mixing it all up back then lol!!

What fun! I remember my mom making me a totally groovy and far out quilted jacket with matching purse when I was around 7 years old. It was avocado green and gold. I loved it! LOL

I remember the ladies group in our church making quilts and having tham all set up for quilting in the basement (this is where my obsession for quilting came from) in the 1970's.....I sure don't remember quilts looking that the ones in your book. They must have been more old-fashioned, lol.

Love your post today. My grandmother and mom has made a few quilts. My grandmother made one with pieces of all of her kids clothes after they were handed down. I have that one.

I think my mom may have had that book. The cover looks very familiar, like a picture I remember from my childhood.
That optical illusion quilt could give a person a headache just looking at it, I wonder what it would do sleeping under it?
