Blogger's Quilt Festival: Fall 2011

Its that time again: the Blogger's Quilt Festival Fall 2011...and more than 350 quilts are on view at Amy's Creative Side. I'm coming a little late to the party but I just put the last stitch on this quilt.

I'm calling it, not very creatively, The Circle Quilt.
The circles are made from left-over cut-offs from my Drunkard's Path Quilt. (BTW, you can see a tutorial on using Marti Mitchell's templates for this quilt on my side board.) I actually hand-pieced the quarter circles last spring when I was visiting (and helping out a bit with) my new twin granddaughters in Boston. I machine appliqued the circles with a buttonhole stitch...you can see how I used iron-on interfacing to make this super easy to do here.

I used an overall free motion quilting pattern of simple round loops and I've really happy with the look...and it was quick too.

I love the bright yellow and white circles on this narrow red and white striped fabric. The stripes are about 1/8" wide. I used it in the binding and I'm enjoying the horizontal stripe in the narrow 1/4" binding.

Here's the back...a minimalist quilting delight!

Bloggers' Quilt Festival-Spring 2011

It's that time again...time for the Bloggers' Quilt Festival. I'm a little late to the party but better late than never! :)

I decided to show my Drunkard's Path quilt because it is truly one of my favorite quilts.
I wanted to make a two color quilt, a drunkard's path quilt, and use hanging diamonds quilting since I started quilting over 20 years ago and its all in this quilt. Plus, I really love the way I doodled the free machine quilting-I'm really happy that I doodled right up to the cable.
You can see what I mean in this pix-lots of machine quilting and I love it!

Hop over to Amy's and see all the amazing quilts being shared this week.

Basket Quilt for the Blogger's Quilt Festival

Its time again for the Blogger's Quilt Festival, graciously hosted by Amy. I thought I'd share a favorite quilt of mine-my basket quilt.
The pattern is actually called Cake Stand but I've always thought of this as my basket quilt. I just love the ribbon border. There are 36 baskets made with 14 different fabrics. I remember that from a fat eighth (9" x 22") I could get 2 baskets. I "gridded" the triangles and it was quite easy to make all the HSTs that way.
You all know how much I love vintage things. This was the first time I tried my hand at a "vintage look" quilt. I wanted a 1930s feel to the quilt-it was just when 30s repro fabrics were coming out and while I used some I mostly used quilting or dress fabrics that gave the impression that I wanted.
The above fabric was given to me by a friend (dress scraps) and the below is actually one of the early Japanese quilting fabrics.
It is hand quilted...you can see below the feather wreath, a little fleur de lis design and one inch parallel lines that I used in the spaces between the baskets. (You also get a peak on the upper right of one of the 30s repro fabrics.) I just outline quilted the baskets with 1/4" and 1/2" lines.
This quilt was on our bed for years but then I noticed that it has started to fade. It was in the closet for two years but I missed seeing it so now I've put it out in the guest room (and I'm keeping the shutters closed unless we actually have guests!)

Hope you enjoyed seeing this quilt...hop on over to Amy's and visit all the wonderful quilts being shared this week.

For the 2010 Spring Bloggers Quilt Festival, I'm showing this Crazy Quilt that I made before I started blogging and have never shown on my blog. I used many different fabrics including velvets, silks, satin, sateen and cottons. Some of the fabrics are Japanese. The embroidery on the seams was done on the sewing machine while the rest of the embroidery was done by hand.
Here you can see that I used a Kate Greenaway little girl with a hat as well as a bird and some silk ribbon flowers. I also used an English paper pieced hexagon flower that I had made years before...I like how it looked mixed in with the crazy patches. There's a basket of flowers embroidered in the center of the hexagon flower.
The fan is one of my favorite parts of this quilt...I really like the silk ribbon flower vines. There are also silk ribbon flowers growing on two other patches.
In this section I added a cut out lace motif-it hasn't photographed very well and is overly white and bright. There's also another Kate Greenaway design-this time a little boy and some more silk ribbon flowers.
Here you can see, besides the center medallion flower vase, some classic crazy quilt embroidery designs: a pair of owls, a fan, and bird. You can just see part of my initials from the bottom corner of the quilt.
I enjoyed making this quilt-I especially enjoyed adding the embroidery. Some of the designs I marked but many of the smaller designs just freely developed and I really liked just adding silk ribbon flowers wherever.

This year I made a crazy quilt pillow for a very dear friend in Germany...you can see it here.

It is always fun to participate in Amy's Bloggers Quilt Festival and there are so many wonderful quilts to see.

Bloggers Quilt Festival

Amy at Park City Girl is hosting a virtual Quilt Exhibit this week so hop on over to Amy's to join in the fun and share a favorite quilt of yours.

I'm showing this hand-quilted colorwash log cabin quilt with hexagon flower applique. I made this two years ago and think it is just perfect for a lovely spring day.

It is one of my favorite quilts...if you want to see my ultimate, #1 favorite (and already blogged about) quilt, that would be the Wedding Quilt.
